We Are The Generation
By: Maryam Khan

We are the generation
Of the irrevocably broken,
of the dead but living.
In a world filled with hate and despair

We are the generation
Of  “Drinking Alone”
Of popping pills for the slightest thrill getting high to hide the pain
Of doctors and fake prescriptions.

We are the generation
Of “Academic Excellence”
Yet lack motivation for a tomorrow
With lost eyes
Struggling to find a direction.

We are the generation
Of  “Acceptance”
Yet judge behind each others’ backs
From a perfect nose to the size of one’s waist
Worrying about what’s on the outside instead of what’s on the inside.

We are the generation
Of “Political Awareness”
Yet uninformed of the situation
Focusing on the unimportant unaware we are a bombarding, missile nation.

YET

We are the generation
Of “Diversity”
Of not caring about one’s shade
Advocating for those who have passed due to police brutality
Not caring about who one chooses as their partner in relation.

We are the generation
Of  “Higher education”
Where every child deserves an equal education
Not caring about where they come from but their dedication.

We are the generation
Of “Gender Equality”
Sharing equal pay
A Pantsuit nation.

We are the generation
Of  “Religious Freedom”
Where one can wear a scarf or a turban without it being a burden.
Bold and brave enough to pray openly at an airport or a train station.

We are imperfect,
Inevitably flawed
YET
We are the future of this nation.
